Willard G. Rouse III Award for Excellence, ULI Philadelphia

Adjacent to the campus of Temple University, a 4.5-acre site in Philadelphia has been transformed into a mixed-use, privately owned housing development for 2,000 students. For Phase 1, The View at Montgomery, the concept was a block-wide building designed to engage the edge of campus while channeling the liveliness of its users.  The result is a vibrant, 14-story, fully occupied, 832-bed student residence with quality street level retail. This structure’s lively appearance has become a unique addition to the campus, acting as an iconic landmark for downtown and other surrounding areas.  The View’s location offers convenient access to Philadelphia’s network of public transportation, including bus, subway, and regional rail. Restaurants at the base of The View offer ample outdoor and indoor seating directly onto a bustling plaza, and has become a destination favorite for students, faculty, and staff as well as the surrounding community. As a vibrant development composition, The View prominently displays the dynamism of student residential life within an urban context.
