FringeArts engaged the architects to transform the semi-abandoned historic building into a thriving arts center that houses its operation’s headquarters and serves as its flagship venue. The program includes a flexible theater, rehearsal studio, offices and restaurant with actively used open plaza along Race Street. The contemporary facility encompasses 10,000 square feet which houses a 225-seat black-box theater, event and rehearsal studio spaces, a plaza for outdoor seasonal events and picnic-style outdoor dining, a gastro-pub type restaurant, and office space for the organization. The completion of the project represents a keystone in one of the City of Philadelphia’s efforts to connect to its waterfront and link the Race Street Connector Project and Race Street Pier Project. The preservation and adoptive reuse of this infrastructural building in its waterfront context is an important element in celebrating the city significant industrial legacy.
